Rimini, February 27, 2026 – The energy transition requires places where ideas can be translated into concrete applications and new skills that can transform theory into industrial practice.

With its Innovation District, KEY – The Energy Transition Expo becomes the epicentre of sustainable innovation, consolidating its role as a growth accelerator and development platform for young Italian and international enterprises operating in the energy sector.

The new layout of the IEG (Italian Exhibition Group) event, scheduled to take place from 4th to 6th March at Rimini Expo Centre, confirms that an entire hall, D4, will host innovation. Within this space, the Green Jobs&Skills initiative will foster the encounter between supply and demand for jobs that involve new sustainable skills.

Another feature will be the BEX - Beyond Exploration stand to promote the new expo-conference on space economy and commercial space flight, organised by IEG in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Region and scheduled to take place from 23rd to 25th September at Rimini Expo Centre.

AN OPEN INNOVATION ROUTE

The Innovation District was conceived as an authentic open innovation route to connect start-ups with consolidated companies and potential investors, thus encouraging product and service innovation and the establishment of new sustainable businesses. The area aims to promote companies that invest in research and development, giving visibility to their most advanced solutions and functioning as a catalyst for the technological evolution of sectors involved in the energy transition.

THE START-UP & SCALE-UP AREA

Within the Innovation District, the Start-up & Scale-up area will feature the most cutting-edge ideas and projects in KEY's seven product sectors: solar, wind, hydrogen, energy efficiency, energy storage, e-Mobility and Sustainable City.

Presenting these will be 32 innovative Italian and international Start-ups and SMEs selected from the 67 companies that responded to the Call for Start-ups organized by Italian Exhibition Group in collaboration with ITA - Italian Trade Agency, ART-ER (consortium company from Emilia-Romagna active in supporting innovation and entrepreneurship), Fondazione MAI (part of the Confindustria system), ANGI (National Association of Young Innovators) and Plug and Play Tech Center, the largest global open innovation and venture capital platform.

The seven most innovative young companies, one for each sector of the event, will be awarded a plaque of recognition.

The solutions on display will range from energy efficiency to electric mobility with a strong presence of Artificial Intelligence applied to energy management to monitor consumption in real time, detect anomalies and optimize resources, thus reducing waste and maximizing savings for large factories, companies, citizens and energy communities. Projects featured will include highly innovative heat pumps, gravitational storage systems that capture and conserve energy, advanced monitoring technologies that integrate satellite images, drone surveys and terrestrial sensors, innovations that automate technical project management and improve the performance of existing systems, such as self-cleaning treatments for photovoltaic panels, and integrated platforms to install and monetize for electric vehicle and e-bike charging points. These will be joined by models based on the collaborative economy that connect companies with citizens who want to invest in solar energy, and services to help users understand, conceptualize and create the business opportunities that sustainability and the energy transition enable. The research will bring solutions for developing reactors that make the most of catalysts, and recyclable thermoplastic materials for wind turbines to the show.

THE LORENZO CAGNONI INNOVATION AWARD

On Wednesday 4th March at 5.15 pm in the Innovation Arena, the seven KEY exhibitors who presented the most cutting-edge projects, one for each of the event’s product categories, will be awarded the Lorenzo Cagnoni Innovation Award with an official plaque in recognition of the excellence achieved. The initiative is designed to promote all those companies that have committed years to the development of increasingly innovative products and services in the field of energy transition.

GREEN JOBS&SKILLS: TRAINING TRANSITION PROFESSIONALS

Employment in the energy sector is a major source of global job growth. However, the supply of new, qualified workers is not keeping pace with market needs.

To help bridge this gap and encourage the encounter between job supply and demand in the energy and sustainability fields, KEY 2026’s Innovation District will include the Green Jobs&Skills initiative, in collaboration with Green Factor, which targets recent graduates and school-leavers from technical institutes, young professionals, workers who want to focus on sustainability, and companies looking for talent.

For those who wish to enter the green job market, the project is an opportunity for career orientation.

The event’s official website, accessible from desktops or via apps, includes a digital space specifically for “green jobs”. Here, exhibiting companies can promote a vertical event aimed at talent acquisition. Interested students, professionals and researchers can pre-register for the presentation and send their CV or cover letter directly via the platform.

The entire day of Friday 6th March will be dedicated to training and career orientation. Furthermore, in collaboration with ENEA and CNA, a Hackathon will be launched in which energy students at Technical Institutes from all over Italy will compete for three days.

ROME, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Germany and Italy pledged on Friday to coordinate within the EU to promote deregulation of industry, a sign of the bloc's two biggest manufacturers exploring closer alignment as their interests diverge from those of members including France.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz unveiled a joint plan to push regulatory simplification, stronger industrial policy and closer cooperation on energy, defence and migration.

The two governments said Europe must strengthen its ability to act in response to Russia's war in Ukraine and wider global challenges, while boosting growth and resilience in the EU's industrial base.

Berlin and Rome see their industrial strength increasingly eroded by China and challenged by EU regulations, notably the so-called Green Deal which has upended the automobile market.

"Today I believe Italy and Germany are closer than ever," Meloni said, speaking at a news conference alongside Merz, adding that the EU's ecological transition had "brought our industries to their knees" and empowered China.

Recent transatlantic tensions have also highlighted policy gaps with France, whose President Emmanuel Macron pushed this week for a tough line against Washington. Germany and Italy, the EU's two biggest exporters to the United States, have been more cautious in public.

Though Meloni's party has roots in the far right, Merz sees her as a pragmatic ally who shares his focus on protecting Europe's industrial base, such as managing U.S. pressure over Greenland without escalation.

"During this eventful week, the two of us have spoken with each other almost every day about how to deal with the difficult issue involving Denmark and Greenland," Merz said.

SLOW MOVING EUROPE SLIPPING BEHIND

In their 19-page plan of action, Berlin and Rome called for a simplification of rules within the 27-nation EU and urged "legislative and regulatory self-restraint" to help cut red tape.

The two nations backed deeper single-market integration, especially in services, while highlighting industrial priorities, including automotive and energy-intensive sectors.

Their bid to improve cooperation underscores growing concern in European capitals that the EU will fall further behind the United States and China on technology, industry and economic security unless member states move in step.

On critical raw materials, they pledged to work together on securing supply chains, looking to counter China's growing influence on prices. With an eye on cheap Chinese e-retailers, they called for the EU to move to ensure fair competition.

Meloni and Merz said they supported the swift entry into force of an EU trade agreement with South and Central American nations - another issue where they have diverged from Paris, which wants more protection for farmers. They also supported finalising Indo-Pacific trade deals.

The two countries also signed a defence cooperation accord to deepen joint work across land, air, maritime and electronic-warfare systems.

 كشفت رئيسة الوزراء الإيطالية جورجيا ميلوني والمستشار الألماني فريدريش ميرز عن خطة مشتركة لدفع عجلة تبسيط اللوائح، وتعزيز السياسة الصناعية، وتوثيق التعاون في مجالات الطاقة والدفاع والهجرة.

 قالت الحكومتان إن على أوروبا تعزيز قدرتها على التحرك في مواجهة الحرب الروسية في أوكرانيا والتحديات العالمية الأوسع، مع تعزيز النمو والمرونة في القاعدة الصناعية للاتحاد الأوروبي.

 وتشهد برلين وروما تراجعاً متزايداً في قوتهما الصناعية أمام الصين، وتحدياً من لوائح الاتحاد الأوروبي، ولا سيما ما يُسمى بالصفقة الخضراء التي أحدثت تغييراً جذرياً في سوق السيارات.

 "أعتقد اليوم أن إيطاليا وألمانيا أقرب من أي وقت مضى"، هكذا صرّحت ميلوني في مؤتمر صحفي إلى جانب ميرز، مضيفةً أن التحول البيئي للاتحاد الأوروبي "ألحق ضرراً بالغاً بصناعاتنا" ومكّن الصين.

كما أبرزت التوترات الأخيرة عبر الأطلسي فجوات في السياسات مع فرنسا، التي ضغط رئيسها إيمانويل ماكرون هذا الأسبوع من أجل اتخاذ موقف متشدد تجاه واشنطن. أما ألمانيا وإيطاليا، أكبر دولتين مُصدّرتين من الاتحاد الأوروبي إلى الولايات المتحدة، فقد كانتا أكثر حذراً في تصريحاتهما العلنية.

على الرغم من أن حزب ميلوني ينتمي إلى اليمين المتطرف، إلا أن ميرز يراها حليفاً عملياً يشاركه التركيز على حماية القاعدة الصناعية الأوروبية، مثل إدارة الضغط الأمريكي بشأن غرينلاند دون تصعيد.

ويؤكد سعيهما لتحسين التعاون على القلق المتزايد في العواصم الأوروبية من أن الاتحاد الأوروبي سيتخلف أكثر عن الولايات المتحدة والصين في مجالات التكنولوجيا والصناعة والأمن الاقتصادي ما لم تتحرك الدول الأعضاء بالتوازي.

Recent crises have made it increasingly challenging for many African countries to raise financing to support their clean energy ambitions, despite the continent’s huge needs. Africa accounts for around 20% of the world’s population but attracts less than 2% of its spending on clean energy

Energy investment in Africa has been falling in recent years. Spending on fossil fuels – which has typically accounted for around two-thirds of investment – has declined and clean energy investment has remained flat.

Africa is facing a variety of energy challenges. Managing the transition to a low-carbon economy and achieving sustainable development on the continent require a balanced mix of innovative solutions, including large-scale projects, distributed generation and interventions to strengthen the transmission grid.

Electrifying Africa requires a systemic thinking that embraces all the components of the electricity system and its value chains

Renewable technologies offer significant benefits in terms of job creation, energy security, climate change mitigation and adaptation, food and water production, poverty reduction and business creation.

This requires a step change in investment, requiring opening up a range of new capital sources and financing approaches.

Making capital more affordable can unlock significant development across Africa, despite ample resources and favourable underlying economics, multiple barriers hinder the development of bankable clean energy opportunities in Africa and deter private investments in projects and companies at the necessary scale.

Scaling up and replicating existing innovative financing solutions requires a coordinated approach from African governments, development finance institutions, donors and private capital.

The panel focuses on the multiple financing instruments in Africa need to be scaled up to accelerate Africa’s energy future and to improve energy access, with the necessary investments to ensure that everyone has access to reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity.
