The Moroccan Agency for the Development of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ADEREE) and the DESERTEC Foundation have signed a memorandum of understanding to consolidate the partnership between these two institutions. It focuses on the exchange of expertise and know-how in developing energy policy and regulation, and support for ADEREE’s communication and public relations strategy.

The mission of the non-profit DESERTEC Foundation is the worldwide implementation of the “DESERTEC Concept”, a solution to provide climate protection, energy security, water and development by generating sustainable power from the sites where renewable sources of energy are at their most abundant. Dr Thiemo Gropp, Director of the DESERTEC Foundation sees a great potential in the cooperation with ADEREE: "Morocco is a not just a visionary in the region but also a successful pioneer in the global transition to renewables, where ADEREE plays a key role. We are very happy to support their work in this context."

ADEREE is promoting sustainable energy development, particularly in the service of the economy and local communities. It is a public institution whose mission is to develop, promote and expand access to renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency, while contributing to the implementation of the national policy to reduce energy dependence and enhance environmental protection.

As well as being blessed with huge desert areas with intense solar irradiation and extended coastal zones with high wind speeds, several years ago Morocco set highly ambitious goals for the expansion of renewable energy: By 2020, the government envisages installed renewable energy will reach 42% of production capacity at the same time as energy use is reduced by 12%.

Further information
The mission of the DESERTEC Foundation is the worldwide implementation of the DESERTEC Concept. In Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, the non-profit foundation has years of experience in informing society and political decision-makers about the environmental, social, and economic benefits of a transition to renewables. Through projects in Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia, and the DESERTEC University Network, it supports knowledge transfer and educational cooperation. It fosters exchange and cooperation with the private sector such as for example with the foundation of the industrial initiative Dii GmbH. With around 30 employees as well as regional network coordinators and a global community of supporters, the DESERTEC Foundation is active around the world.

DII Special guest

Special guest Bertrand Piccard from Solar Impulse

Flying is a dream of mankind which came true. A dream which would be better if we didn´t have to burn fossil fuels to accomplish it.This idea Bertrand Piccard has prescribed. “Nothing is impossible” seems to be Piccard´s credo, who is known for adventures such as his first ever non-stop around-the-world hot-air balloon flight. Consequently ten years ago, faced with the world’s energy challenges, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg allied around a common yet impossible dream: to fly powered solely by the sun and to prove that progress is possible even with renewable energies. The impossible became possible and for the first time in history an airplane succeeded to fly day and night without any fuel, powered during the 26 hours flight purely by solar energy. To date, Solar Impulse has broken a number of records, the latest in June 2012, when it concluded the world‘s first roundtrip solar-powered intercontinental flight from Switzerland to Morocco.
With this flight to Morocco, a country which is currently investing
quite considerably in renewable energy and where Dii plans the implementation of its first Reference Project ,Bertrand Piccard highlighted the importance of a shift to - Special guest : Bertrand Piccard from Solar Impulse Site Visit to Max Planck Society (Fritz-Haber-Institut ) With more than 100 years of Nobel Prize-winning physics and chemistry research: the Fritz Haber Institute is the oldest
Max Planck Society’ science research institute. It comprises
five departments: Anorganic chemistry, Chemical physics, Molecular physics, Physical chemistry and Theory. Professor Robert Schlögl will hold a welcome speech and guide us through the institute and provide us with an insight into the different research topics including, among others, the field of renewable energy technology and energy efficiency.

wards a sustainable energy supply in the Mediterranean region using the desert´s energy potential Bertrand Piccard’s message: “Today’s technologies – if only governments had the courage to promote them on a massive scale – would allow us to significantly reduce our dependence on fossil energies. It’s not only the environment that would be a winner. Job creation and purchasing power would also benefit from opening up these fascinating development perspectives ” Two pioneers and innovators, both pilots, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg are inventing the future and placing the dream and the excitement at the heart of a scientific adventure. We are proud to present Bertrand Piccard as special guest at the 3rd Dii DESERT ENERGY CONFERENCE. He will give us insight in the visionary project “Solar Impulse” and
show the possibilities of solar energy. Let’s get inspired
