في أذهان العديد من الأمريكيين بأن مخاطر التغير المناخي هي أشياء ستحدث في
المستقبل، كشف كتاب حديث صدر في الولايات المتحدة، عن أن البلاد تجرعت بالفعل
كؤوسا مريرة نتيجة التغير المناخي الذي شرد آلاف الأسر ويهدد حاليا مصير 20 مليون
شخص قد يندفعون إلى الهجرة على نحو فوضوي ومضطرب
والكتاب الذي تناول "القصص غير المروية" لمعاناة أمريكا
من التغير المناخي، لفت إلى أن ثمة تغير اقتصادي هائل سيلحق بالبلاد جراء التغير

وأوضح الكتاب الذي صدر بعنوان: "النزوح العظيم: التغير
المناخي والهجرة القادمة في أمريكا"، أن العقود القليلة الماضية، شهدت اضطرار
الحكومة الفيدرالية لنقل عشرات الآلاف من العائلات بعيدًا عن مناطق الفيضانات،
فضلا عن تحرك عشرات الآلاف من الأفراد من تلقاء أنفسهم في أعقاب الكوارث الطبيعية
وحسب تقرير لمجلة "فورين
أفيرز" حذر الكتاب الذي ألفه "جاك بيتل"، من أن الولايات المتحدة
قد تشهد تحرك ما لا يقل عن 20 مليون شخص نتيجة تغير المناخ، أي أكثر من ضعف عدد
الأشخاص الذين انتقلوا خلال فترة الهجرة الكبرى بأكملها
والهجرة الكبرى في
الولايات المتحدة حدثت خلال الفترة الممتدة من العام 1916 إلى العام 1970، شهدت

الكتاب على جزر فلوريدا كيز، "أول مجموعة من جزر الكناري المعرضة للخطر بسبب
تغير المناخ
وكتب عن قصة شخص يدعى باتريك اشترى
بستانًا مهملاً وعدله ليصبح موردًا لثمار نادرة في الولايات المتحدة القارية. ثم
جاء الإعصار إيرما عام 2017 حيث قرر باتريك وبعض الأصدقاء البقاء على الجزيرة
وانتهى بهم الأمر بالاحتماء في مدرسة قريبة في حين نجوا إلا أن البستان تدمر تماما
من جراء العاصفة
وكتب بيتل أن
"العديد من الجزر في الأرخبيل، وربما جميعها، يمكن أن تغرق تحت الماء تمامًا
بحلول نهاية هذا القرن.. أكثر من أي مكان آخر في الولايات المتحدة"، ومن ثم
فقد قرر بعض سكان كيز المغادرة.
أعاصير وحرائق
وقال بيتل في كتابه أن
الأعاصير ليست الظواهر الجوية الوحيدة التي جعلها تغير المناخ أكثر تأثيراً. فقد
ناقش في قسم آخر من الكتاب بلدات كاليفورنيا. وكتب أنه بعد حوالي شهر من تدمير
إيرما لمنطقة البحر الكاريبي وفلوريدا، اندلع حريق في بلدة كاليستوجا
وتسبب مزيج من الرياح
العاتية والجفاف في تحول الحريق إلى حريق هائل وصل بسرعة إلى مدينة سانتا روزا
ويعرض بيتل في كتابه

man named Patrick who bought a neglected orchard and modified it into a
supplier of rare fruits in the continental United States. Then came Hurricane
Irma in 2017, where Patrick and some friends decided to stay on the island and
ended up taking shelter in a nearby school. While they survived, the orchard
was completely destroyed by the storm
"Many, perhaps all, of the
islands in the archipelago could be completely submerged by the end of this
century ... more than anywhere else in the United States," Bittle wrote,
and some of the Keys decided to leave
Hurricanes and
fires
In his book, Bittle said
hurricanes are not the only weather phenomena made more impactful by climate
change. In another section of the book, he discussed the towns of California.
He wrote that about a month after Irma devastated the Caribbean and Florida, a
fire broke out in the town of Calistoga
A combination of high winds and
drought turned the blaze into a wildfire that quickly reached the city of Santa
Rosa
In his book, Bittle presents
the story of Vicki and Mark Carino, among the Santa Rosa residents whose lives
were shattered by the Tubbs fire. It is said that the couple were asleep when
their daughter called them and demanded that they urgently go out and vacate
the house. They did, and less than ten minutes later, the firestorm swept
through and destroyed their home. While they wanted to rebuild their home in
the aftermath of the fire, they saw many of their neighbors preparing to flee
the area, leaving the couple feeling "completely alone," in a place
that had become almost deserted
Bittle elaborated on the
factors that go into people's decisions to stay or leave once their areas of
residence are affected by climate change. In California, a crisis of increased
fire risk has moved many residents to Nampa, Idaho, and insurance premiums that
have increased due to weather risks have forced people to move elsewhere,
including cities such as Buffalo, New York, and Dallas, Texas
"They simply pack up and leave the places they've spent their whole lives behind," Bittle said
