Waleid Gamal El-Din: Supporting clean energy projects and localizing related industries within our industrial zones is a top priority
New Administrative Capital – Wednesday, 1 April 2026:
The General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), has announced the launch of the National Clean Hydrogen Programme – Egypt at the Authority’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital. The programme aims to accelerate Egypt’s transition toward a competitive hydrogen-based economy, particularly green hydrogen.
The programme is expected to deliver an integrated package of activities designed to enhance Egypt’s readiness for green hydrogen investments. These include preparing pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for priority projects, providing technical support and policy advisory services, strengthening institutional and national capacities, and supporting the establishment of a Green Hydrogen Center of Excellence at SCZONE’s Sokhna facility.
The launch event was attended by representatives from the Ministries of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Local Development, and Environment, along with a UNIDO delegation headed by Ms. Petra Schwager, Chief of the Climate and Technology Partnerships Division.
In this context, Waleid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, stated that launching the National Clean Hydrogen Programme marks an important step in Egypt’s transition toward a green economy. He emphasized that the Authority prioritizes supporting clean energy projects and localizing related industries within its industrial zones. He added that the programme will further reinforce these efforts by providing technical studies, institutional support, and capacity building, contributing to the creation of an attractive and competitive investment environment at both regional and international levels.
Gamal El-Din also noted that SCZONE is steadily advancing its strategy to attract foreign direct investment, enhance industrial competitiveness, and support the energy transition within its integrated industrial zones. He stressed that the Authority aims to position Egypt as a regional hub for the production, trade, and export of green hydrogen, thereby generating added value for the national economy and supporting sustainable development.
For its part, UNIDO expressed its pride in partnering with Egypt in this transformative initiative, highlighting that Egypt possesses significant potential to become a leading country in the green hydrogen sector. Through this programme, both sides are taking a decisive step toward building a clean, sustainable, and competitive economy. The programme aims to accelerate climate-friendly solutions, create local value, foster innovation, and drive comprehensive industrial and economic development.
It is worth noting that the programme is part of UNIDO’s Global Programme for Hydrogen, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which includes 10 countries, with Egypt playing a central role. The programme is implemented through an integrated institutional partnership framework involving several national and international stakeholders in the energy and industrial development sectors.
A steering committee has been established to oversee implementation, comprising representatives from SCZONE, UNIDO as the executing agency, the Ministry of Environment as the national focal point for GEF, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, and the Ministry of Industry, in coordination with the Supreme Council for Green Hydrogen. This framework ensures effective institutional coordination and the proper alignment of programme activities with national priorities.
