Following up on the success of The Society of Singularities, Andreas Reckwitz continues his project of analysing the latent structures and contradictions within Western modernity.
The first comprehensive study of the role of loss within society
Contemporary society is marked by forms of loss in manifold ways: from the effects of climate change to the protest movements of those who have lost out in the process of modernisation, from the regression of liberal democracy to ways of dealing with grief and death in self-help discourses, from compensation for victims of violence to the vulnerabilities of an aging society. But what is behind these diverse phenomena?
In his new book, Andreas Reckwitz demonstrates that the roots of this current explosion in the economy of loss can be traced all the way back to the dawn of modernity, and to a key predicament of Western modernity: namely the antagonism between the future-oriented promises of a society organised around progress and the painful, negative experiences of loss that accompanied these developments. In this landmark sociological study, Reckwitz demonstrates how modern society is at heart driven by a paradoxical relationship to loss: modernity seeks to contain losses while at the same time intensifying them. It makes losses systematically invisible while also actively cultivating and managing them: from nostalgia to risk calculations, from religion to psychotherapy and the politics of victimhood.
In the vulnerable era of late modernity, however, the fragile relationship between loss and progress has been thrown out of balance. The Author
Andreas Reckwitz is to be awarded the 2025 »Political Book« Prize for his book Loss. The »Political Book« Prize is one of the most important non-fiction book prizes in the German speaking world. Endowed with €10,000, it is awarded annually by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
In their public remarks, the jury stated: »Reckwitz describes an image of a society in which technical, economic, and social development are constantly striving for progress, but which has lost sight of a credible vision of the future. [...] His profound analysis of our crisis-ridden present challenges us all to develop a conception of progress that does not gloss over losses but offers space for a collective and just reckoning with them – allowing our society to remain modern while mitigating fears of loss. This book provides an excellent basis for this.«
The »Political Book« Prize is awarded each year to an outstanding new publication that critically examines current socio-political issues, provides thought-provoking and debate-inspiring ideas and is accessible to a broad audience. The winner is chosen by an independent jury. Previous winners include Svetlana Alexievich, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Václav Havel, Carolin Emcke, Thomas Piketty, and Steffen Mau.
The award ceremony will take place on 21 May 2025 in Berlin.

Andreas Reckwitz, born in 1970, is professor of Social Theory and Cultural Sociology at the Humboldt University of Berlin.
His 2017 book Die Gesellschaft der Singularitäten was nominated for the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair and awarded the Bayrischer Buchpreis. He was awarded the Leibniz Prize in 2019 and was a Fellow at the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles in 2022.

متابعةً لنجاح كتاب "مجتمع المفردات"، يواصل أندرياس ريكفيتز مشروعه في تحليل البنى والتناقضات الكامنة في الحداثة الغربية.
أول دراسة شاملة لدور الخسارة في المجتمع
يتميز المجتمع المعاصر بأشكال متعددة من الخسارة: من آثار تغير المناخ إلى حركات احتجاج ممن خسروا في عملية التحديث، ومن تراجع الديمقراطية الليبرالية إلى طرق التعامل مع الحزن والموت في خطابات المساعدة الذاتية، ومن تعويض ضحايا العنف إلى نقاط ضعف مجتمع أصابته الشيخوخة. ولكن ما الذي يكمن وراء هذه الظواهر المتنوعة؟
في كتابه الجديد، يُظهر أندرياس ريكفيتز أن جذور هذا الانفجار الحالي في اقتصاد الخسارة تعود إلى فجر الحداثة، وإلى مأزق رئيسي في الحداثة الغربية: ألا وهو التناقض بين الوعود المستقبلية لمجتمع قائم على التقدم وتجارب الخسارة المؤلمة والسلبية التي رافقت هذه التطورات.
في هذه الدراسة الاجتماعية الرائدة، يُظهر ريكفيتز كيف أن المجتمع الحديث مدفوعٌ في جوهره بعلاقة متناقضة مع الخسارة:
فالحداثة تسعى إلى احتواء الخسائر مع مفاقمتها في الوقت نفسه. فهي تُخفي الخسائر منهجيًا، بينما تُنميها وتُديرها بنشاط: من الحنين إلى حسابات المخاطر، ومن الدين إلى العلاج النفسي وسياسات الضحية.
لكن في عصر الحداثة المتأخرة، الذي يتسم بالهشاشة، اختلّ التوازن في العلاقة الهشة بين الخسارة والتقدم.
والسؤال المُلحّ للمجتمع المعاصر : كيف يُمكن للحداثة الغربية أن تُواجه الخسارة إذا ما خسر وعدها بالتقدم ، مصداقيته؟
