The Cairo Climate Talks is pleased to invite you to participate in the upcoming panel discussion on transportation and urban planning entitled
“Cairo in Motion: Smart Transport and Urban Development”
It will take place on April 16 from 7:00pm at the German Science Center(DWZ), 11, Al-Saleh Ayoub street in Zamalek
The discussion will focus on the obstacles and potential solutions to fostering smart, efficient urban development and transport systems, which can have massive environmental implications on the city of Cairo.
Since it is one of the most polluted and congested cities in the world, Cairo increasingly resembles an oversized car park, rather than a functioning metropolis. In a city designed to carry half of its current population, urban planning has become a critical concern for a variety of reasons, ranging from air pollution to a strained economy resulting from an inability to fluidly navigate the city. Egypt’s 4.2 million vehicles contribute a major share of the country’s emissions, and every year 200,000 new cars hit the streets.
Informal transport and development solutions have long kept Cairo’s streets and people moving, filling gaps in formal networks. Historically, urban planning has often taken a backseat to pressure from developers as the city expands outward and upward to accommodate a burgeoning population. From microbuses to satellite cities, the 22nd Cairo Climate Talks “Cairo in Motion: Smart Transport and Urban Development” will address a wide range of development successes and challenges on both a micro and macro level.
Several alternative transportation initiatives will also showcase their creative traffic solutions.
