ACWUA special session at the World Water Forum

The session will be an occasion to present case studies of successful experiences on water, sanitation and desalination, and on water and energy efficiency. Also, it’s an occasion to present opportunities and challenges for sustainable development and integrated water resources management in Arab region and the relation between water-energy in Arab region. The Arab world is the poorest area in water resources and characterized by an arid and semi arid climate with very limited and poorly distributed water resources and shortage of rainfall. In light of climate change, the region appears today as the most threatened area in terms of decrease and degradation of these water resources. In big cities, high demographic growth and extravagant rural exodus, the pressure on water resources continues to increase and becomes difficult to satisfy water demands especially in summer period. Thus, this situation is worrying, and imposes major challenges to policy makers in terms of strategies and investment for sustainable development. The problem of water pollution makes the already scarce water resources unusable. New resources e.g. reuse of wastewater and desalination of sea water are expensive solutions and can have adverse effects on both the environment and the preservation of water resources. As sanitation services are still developing, lack of sanitation networks access can cause risks of water pollution and hygiene problems. Thus, we should develop strategies and policies for integrated management of water resources and integrate the component "Water" in urban planning as an absolute priority
