Solemn price ceremony hosted by Weidmüller group at Hannover Messe
The German start-up QMILK produces a textile fiber made from milk that is not fit for human consumption and therefore recycles a waste product. The company implemented strict sustainable criteria for the production of the fiber, which is 100 percent natural. In order to honor this innovation, the Hannover-based company receives the GreenTec Award in the category production. Together with the guardian of the category ZVEI e. V., the price was awarded on May 14, hosted by Weidmüller group at Hannover Messe in hall 11, exhibition booth number B60.
Berlin, April 17, 2015 – QMILK can be seen as the “Mission Nature” of the textile industry. The company has committed itself to an integrated sustainability management. QMILK benefits from the food industry by-product and uses milk that is not fit for human consumption. QMILK is working to build the first logistics system for the collection of non-food milk. The goal is to create a zero-waste process from the very beginning of the production. The farmers obtain a compensation for the milk, which they would otherwise have to dispose of. Using their unique technology, QMILK converts non-food milk into a high-tech resource that binds the CO2-emission. To produce one kilogram of biopolymer, a maximum of two liters of water and a temperature of just 80 degrees are needed. No waste emerges during the production. Moreover, the fiber is compostable at home and made of 100 percent natural resources. On top of that the QMILK fiber is antibacterial, temperature regulating, chemically resistant, silk-like and self-extinguishing with the fire protection class B2.
Sustainability and the responsible, efficient usage of resources in the entire manufacturing chain are a priority to QMILK: low water waste, no fuels, marginal waste of energy, optimized processes, as well as reduction of wastrel. That strategy includes a corporate social responsibility where the staff is of particular importance.
Weidmüller group hosted the award ceremony at their exhibition booth at Hannover Messe, where the company introduced pioneering solutions such as an innovative data transfer technology.
QMILK’s CEO Dipl. Biol. Anke Domaske feels honored: “The GreenTec Awards offer a unique platform for green technology. The GreenTec Awards support QMILK’s goals, which is of high value to us.”
ZVEI, Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie e. V., guardian of the category Production, has been a partner of the GreenTec Awards for many years and supports the annual selection process. ZVEI’s CEO and GreenTec Awards jury member Gunther Koschnik about the laureate: ”I was particularly impressed by the consistent climate efficiency and responsible resource usage in the QMILK value chain. The fibers are a real GreenTec product”
Elke Eckstein, CEO Operations of Weidmüller group and winner in the category Production in 2014, recently became a jury member of the GreenTec Awards. “It is a pleasure to host the price-giving ceremony and award companies which commit themselves to the environment. Sustainability isn’t just a temporary trend to Weidmüller, but has been deeply rooted in the company for decades.“ An intelligent and energy efficient corporation is no longer a vision of the future. Weidmüller’s production building, which was completed in 2011, saved 1.700 tons of CO2. “Being the first energy transparent factory, Weidmüller offers customers and partners the opportunity to experience the measures on the spot and benefit from their experiences,” Eckstein explains. “Mutual learning – for a better future.”
