“ Million 20 Tons: Managing the Challenge of Solid Wast ”

It will take place on May 21 from 6:00pm at the German Science Center (DWZ), 11, Al-Saleh Ayoub street in Zamalek

Egypt generates 20 million tons of municipal solid waste on an annual basis, or the equivalent of the largest Giza Pyramid every 40 days. That number grows an additional 2 percent each year, according to the latest figures from The Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs

Less than 65 percent of this waste is collected by the public or private sector, and a mere 20 percent is recycled or responsibly dealt with. The negative impact on public health and the environment is significant. From refuse in the streets to blocked channels and polluted waterways, waste is visible everywhere. The cost of environmental degradation caused by inadequate waste management reaches 0.2 percent of GDP, according to a World Bank study. Today, that would mean more than LE 360 million

Since waste is an important source of greenhouse gases, promoting recycling, composting and biogas activities would significantly reduce emissions. Waste can also be used as a clean energy source. In this solid waste management crisis, Egypt is facing institutional, technical and economic challenges, including the absence of an integrated solid waste management framework. The 23rd Cairo Climate Talks “20 Million Tons: Managing the Challenge of Solid Waste” will host local and international experts and stakeholders to discuss viable solutions and models for an integrated solid waste management in Egypt
