EUROPE WILL BENEFIT FROM STRENGTHENED RENEWABLES COOPERATION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

Dii welcomes the European Council’s call for increasing electricity interconnections in the Mediterranean area, including interconnections with third countries

The recent call of the European Council to promote infrastructure development within Europe, including the Mediterranean area and third countries, is an important step towards accelerating the EU’s climate and renewables agenda. “Increasing grid interconnection with the Southern Mediterranean while ensuring that transmission bottlenecks within the European power system will be relieved would be of mutual benefit for both regions”, said Paul van Son, CEO of Dii, “We therefore strongly support the Council conclusions”.
As regards the foreign political dimension of energy relations and the Ukraine crisis, the EU should push for increasing and diversifying external energy relations instead of seeking for isolationist solutions. “With growing shares of renewable energy and subsequently increased need of balance capacity, the EU will more than ever rely on energy relations with its neighboring countries in order to ensure energy security”, Mr. van Son said. “The Mediterranean region with its vast potential of solar and wind energy is a promising partner in that respect”, he added.
Completing the internal energy market and significantly expanding cross-border grid interconnections within the EU is a prerequisite for EU-MENA market integration. Dii thus calls on the European Commission and Council to develop the internal energy market further, thereby advocating a market oriented approach and including market integration with the EU’s neighboring regions.
Dii is currently working on a feasibility study analyzing grid interconnections between Algeria, Tunisia and Libya to Italy. The study is supported by the European Commission under its TEN-E program.
