The Cabinet under Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab approved a proposal of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy regarding the tariff of purchasing electricity from the private sector to encourage its participation in establishing power stations.
This comes after the ministry received several domestic and international offers for establishing solar and wind-operared power stations with capacities reaching 10,000 megawatts. “Al-Ahram” newspaper learnt that the ministry’s proposed tariff reaches EGP 0.85 per kilowatt for electricity from wind-operated energy and EGP 1.4 per kilowatt for electricity from solar energy. Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mohamed Shaker said that dependence on participation of the private sector is important. He added that the government should provide the guarantees and conditions to encourage investment in the energy field. Shaker explained that Egypt is currently planning to expand the use of renewable energy in order to meet the increasing demand on energy.
