March 11. 2014. With the “Second Open German Championship in wastewater technology”, in addition to a variety of technological and scientific lectures and other offerings, the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) also offers visitors to the IFAT in Munich a practically oriented trade fair highlight. On four days of the fair, trainees and young professionals under 25 years of age along with specialists with many years of experience in sewer operations and wastewater treatment plants vei for the best places in this professional competition. Visitors to the fair can experience first-hand what work is like in this area and what knowledge and skills are expected of the professionals.
The participants from the wastewater plants show viewers how they enter a sewer and what safety precautions should be taken before. In addition, under competitive conditions they maintain and repair an underwater pump, which is needed in everyday work to lift the wastewater or sludge in the sewer over inclines on the way to the treatment plant and thus continue the transportation. The competitors from the treatment plants operate measuring, controlling and regulation devices and also demonstrate with magnetic cards on a whiteboard the flow diagram of a wastewater treatment plant. To complicate matters, in so doing, they have to plan measures to remedy a simulated failure.
What it’s all about: safety and speed
All competitions are a matter of speed, but also compliance with regulations. Because the DWA pursues several goals with the professional competition: it aims to introduce the profession “specialist for wastewater engineering” and recruit young people for it, but at the same time, also to raise awareness that occupational health and safety should not be neglected.
Certificates and medals for the teams
The best teams will go home at the end of the week with medals and certificates that are presented to them on the competition area. The award ceremony for the trainees is to be held on Tuesday 6 May, for the wastewater treatment plant professionals on Wednesday 7 May and the sewer champions on Thursday, 8 May - each at 5.30 pm.
The Second Open Championship in Wastewater Technology can be viewed in the outdoor area between Halls A 1 and B 1. The competitions kick off on Monday 5 May at 2.00 pm and start on the following days at 9.00 am
